# Image credits and provenance

Wunderlore is an unofficial, non-commercial fan project (see the notice in the site footer).

## What is and is not known

The photographs and artwork used as scene backgrounds were downloaded by the project owner from
image platforms (Freepik, Pexels, Pixabay and Unsplash), in the modes those platforms offer for free
use. That is **all** that is known about their origin.

For these images, the project did not record:

- the author or photographer;
- the original page, or the image ID;
- the individual licence text in force on the day of download;
- whether that licence asks for a credit.

Nothing below fills those gaps with guesses. This list does not claim that each image has a
confirmed, individual credit, and it is **not** proof that a licence is valid or that no obligation
applies. Anyone who recognises one of these images and can document its author or licence is welcome
to tell the project owner so that the entry can be corrected, or the image replaced.

The site never changes the photographs beyond the processing described in the table. It darkens them
with a green overlay on the page.

| `who-am-i-old-keys.avif` (2400×1600) | Who Am I? background | Unsplash (see the note below) | Not confirmed (see the note below) | Not recorded | Not recorded: the free-use terms of Unsplash applied when it was downloaded; no individual licence text was kept | Not confirmed |

Notes:

- The AVIF files are resized and converted copies of the downloaded originals. The originals are not
  part of this repository.
- Earlier project notes mention an author and a platform page for two of these images
  (`which-character-hobbit-hole.avif` and `lore-challenge-archive-library.avif`). They were taken from
  file names of downloads and were **not** confirmed, so they are not repeated here as facts.
- `who-am-i-old-keys.avif` (photograph of old keys on dark crumpled paper) was converted from a file the
  project owner downloaded from Unsplash on 2026-11-05, named `anna-zakharova-CdJN7JFVLd8-unsplash.jpg`.
  That name follows Unsplash's pattern and is the only source of the author name and the image ID, so
  they are recorded here **as the file name reads, not as confirmed facts**: no credit file came with the
  download (the `atribuicoes.txt` the owner mentioned was not found in the Downloads folder), and the page
  of the image was not consulted. Unsplash does not require a credit, but crediting the photographer is
  welcome; if the author is confirmed, add the credit here and to the site footer's credits page. This
  entry does not claim that any particular use is licensed.
- `which-character-hobbit-hole.avif` depicts a hobbit-hole. A photo licence, where one exists, covers
  the picture itself and not necessarily any design shown in it; this was not investigated.

## Link-preview images (Open Graph / Twitter)

`share/home.jpg`, `share/which-character.jpg`, `share/lore-challenge.jpg` and `share/who-am-i.jpg` are 1200×630 JPEG
derivatives made from the scene images above. They exist only because AVIF is not reliably supported
by link-preview crawlers; the site itself keeps using the AVIF files. They have no origin of their own:
whatever applies to the source image applies to its derivative.

| Derivative | Made from |
|---|---|
| `share/home.jpg` | `enchanted-forest.avif` |
| `share/which-character.jpg` | `which-character-hobbit-hole.avif` |
| `share/lore-challenge.jpg` | `lore-challenge-archive-library.avif` |
| `share/who-am-i.jpg` | `who-am-i-old-keys.avif` (cropped from the same original) |

There is no link-preview image for Quotes or Who Said It?.

## Artwork made for the project

- **Character symbols** (Which Character Are You?): ten inline SVG drawings made for this project: a
  ring on a chain (Frodo), a seedling (Sam), a sword (Aragorn), a staff (Gandalf), a burning eye
  (Sauron), a fish (Gollum), a bow and arrow (Legolas), an axe (Gimli), a star above two leaves
  (Galadriel) and a horn (Boromir). No third-party artwork was traced, copied or adapted, and no film
  costume, likeness or promotional art was used.
- **Site icon** (`icon.svg`, a leaf with a ring): a simple vector drawing made for the project.
  `favicon.ico` is the fallback icon; its creation is not documented here.

The code and these drawings follow the project licence (see the repository `LICENSE`).

## Rights in the story itself

The characters, names and world of The Lord of the Rings belong to the Tolkien Estate and its
licensees; the film adaptations belong to their rights holders. Wunderlore is not affiliated with,
endorsed or sponsored by any of them. Whether a fan project like this is acceptable outside a
non-commercial portfolio is a rights question that this document does not answer.
